CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University Department of Athletics announced another successful semester in the classroom for Saluki student-athletes. The athletic department posted a combined 3.06 GPA for the fall 2012 semester. That is an increase from the 3.03 GPA posted for the spring 2012 semester.
Among the academic highlights from the semester, 45 student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0. In addition, 62 percent of SIU student-athletes recorded a GPA of 3.0 or better for the semester, and 60 percent of SIU student-athletes finished the semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
“I am very excited about the achievements of our student-athletes in the classroom,” Associate Athletic Director for Student Services Kristina Therriault-Stepps said. “Not only have they excelled in their respective sports, but they have also done what is expected of them as students. We are very proud of the commitment that our student-athletes, coaches, administration and athletic staff have made to academics.”
The volleyball program led the department with a 3.709 term GPA, followed by softball with a 3.541. The men’s basketball team produced a 2.947 GPA for the semester, which is the highest recorded by the program since the department began tracking GPA by team in the early 1990s.
In total, 13 of the 18 athletic teams at SIU recorded a GPA of 3.0 or better for the term.
