CARBONDALE, Ill. - The partnership between Saluki Athletics and SIU's Department of Kinesiology Sport Studies Association has been overwhelmingly successful in collecting donated shoes for its most recent Soles4Souls project.
Over the past few weeks, SIU student-athletes, members of the Sport Studies Association (SSA), as well as members of the athletic department and the Carbondale community were actively involved in donating all types of shoes to benefit the Soles4Souls program, a Nashville-based charity that collects these shoes and provides them to areas of the world that are in need.
Together, with special help from the Saluki football program, over 2,400 pairs of shoes were donated.
"We are very happy that the athletic department could support the SSA in its first special project of the year," said Kristina Therriault, Assistant AD for Student Services. "Without the extra support of the community this program would not have been as successful."
The SSA also recognized two SIU alumni, Dr. Mindy Moore and her husband, Staff Sergeant Joseph Cervantes of the United States Marine Corps, who personally donated 1,000 pairs of new Army boots to the cause.
Currently, the SSA is accepting donations in order to transport these shoes to the Soles4Souls headquarters in Nashville, Tenn. Anyone interested in making a monetary donation to cover these costs or wanting to know more about the service project should contact SSA faculty advisor Dr. Bobbi Knapp via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or SSA president Daman Emrick at email@example.com.
