Four Salukis named among 25 Most Distinguished Seniors

    SIU's 25 Most Distinguished Seniors

    CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Four Southern Illinois University student-athletes have been named among the school's 25 Most Distinguished Senior Award recipients for 2012.

    Saluki football players Cameron James and Mike McElroy along with track and field/cross country athlete Dan Dunbar and softball player Mallory Duran-Sellers all earned the honor. This marks the second consecutive season Saluki Athletics has had four student-athletes honored.

    "We are extremely proud that Cameron, Mike, Dan and Mallory and have been recognized by SIU not only for their academic strength, but also for their dedication to pursuits outside the classroom," said SIU Associate Athletics Director for Student Services Kristina Therriault.

    The 25 Most Distinguished Senior Awards will be presented by the Office of the Chancellor, the SIU Alumni Association and the Student Alumni Council at a banquet on April 14.

    A two-year player that has appeared in 19 games for the Salukis, James received the Missouri Valley Football Conference Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award in 2010. The Mattoon, Ill., native is a management major with a 3.425 GPA.

    McElroy was a two-time All-MVFC safety for the Saluki football team and ranks third in SIU history with 15 interceptions. He was named Academic All-MVFC three times and earned Second-Team Academic All-America honors in 2009. A health education major, McElroy carries a cumulative GPA of 3.714.

    A two-time MVC Champion, Dunbar has earned multiple All-MVC honors throughout his four-year track and cross country career. The O'Fallon, Ill., native was named an MVC Scholar Athlete three times in cross country and twice so far in track and field. A management major with a 3.828 GPA, Dunbar is also a member of the Air National Guard.

    Duran-Sellers is in her third season as a team captain for Saluki softball, her fourth as a starter in the outfield. She is a two-time All-MVC player and a two-time MVC Scholar Athlete selection. An English education major with a 4.0 GPA, Duran-Sellers was named First-Team Academic All-American in 2011.
