CARBONDALE, Ill. -- - The athletic department at Southern Illinois University announced on Thursday the promotion of Joe Cross to full-time academic counselor. He will work under the supervision of Kristina Therriault, director of student services.
"Joe has worked extremely well with our coaches, staff and student-athletes, and has built strong relationships in the community," Therriault said. "His experience as a student-athlete and his enthusiasm for the job are two of his greatest attributes."
Cross is a 2001 graduate of Illinois where he majored in sports management and also played basketball. He is currently enrolled in graduate school at SIU and expects to earn a master's in education next year.
As a graduate assistant during the past year, Cross has organized study tables for all sports, coordinated the tutoring of student-athletes, and organized community service activities for Saluki student-athletes.
"Joe is well-respected in the Carbondale community where he grew up and his family still resides," said Kathy Jones, associate athletic director. "Under his coordination, SIU's student-athlete community service participation has increased dramatically."
