CARBONDALE, Ill.--The Southern Illinois Student-Athlete Advisory Committee collected over 170 shoeboxes and filled them with gifts to donate to students at local elementary schools who participate in Head Start programs.

"This project would not have been possible without the leadership of Anita Lee (women's tennis) and her fellow SAAC members,” said Athletic-Academic Graduate Assistant Connor James. “They spent a great amount of time wrapping presents and raising funds.”

The “Santa's Shoeboxes” include tickets to SIU Women’s Basketball games, Play-Dough, holiday activity books, school supplies, gloves and many other items. The boxes were individually wrapped and will be delivered to the schools this week.

"SAAC is extremely thankful for the support they received from Saluki Athletics and Randy Johnson at 710 Book Store,” said James.

Student-Athletes on the committee will have the opportunity to meet with the kids in the Head Start programs and hand deliver the shoeboxes.

“The reward will definitely come when they get to see the smiles on the faces of the kids as they open these gifts."
