    Bunyan was a two-time All-American in cross country and was described by coach Bill Cornell as "by far, our best distance runner ever." In 1983, he led the team to its fourth-consecutive MVC title, while finishing 20th at Nationals. He enhanced his national stature by finishing fifth among 6,664 runners at the 1983 Boston Marathon.
