Gene Carello of West Frankfort was an outstanding performer on four of Southern Illinois University's best ever golf teams. Those four squads posted a combined total of fifty-seven wins and thirteen losses in dual competition. The 1964 team won the National Collegiate Athletic Association College Division Championship, and Gene was named to the NCAA's All-America golf team after posting a year-long average of 74.6 strokes and winning ten of fifteen dual matches against the top golfers on teams such as Notre Dame, Tulane, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Purdue. As a junior in 1962, Gene was elected captain by his teammates and led them to a 15-4 dual record. Gene continued to make golf an integral part of his life upon leaving SIU by assuming the club professional's post at Franklin County Country Club in West Frankfort and has remained a fixture in Southern Illinois golfing circles.
