Division I-AA conferences began using the tiebreaker system to break ties in regular season conference games in 1994. SIU's first overtime game came on Homecoming 1995, when Coach Shawn Watson and the Salukis beat Missouri State before a crowd of more than 12,000. SIU QB Danny Smith threw three TD passes to WR Jermaine Gray to give Southern a 27-20 lead with 5:20 remaining. PK Ryan Given missed the subsequent extra point. Missouri State scored a TD with seven seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. In OT, Missouri State had the ball first and settled for a 36-yard field goal. On the fifth play of SIU's possession, Smith passed 10 yards to WR Reggie Fowler for the winning touchdown.
