Though SIU finished the season 4-8, most Saluki observers believe this Homecoming win jump-started coach Jerry Kill's program. Southern's victory ended an 18-game losing streak versus the then-undefeated and No. 8-ranked Leathernecks. Freshman QB Joel Sambursky's six-yard touchdown pass to RB Brandon Robinson as time expired won the game, but RB Muhammad Abdulqaadir's performance keyed the Saluki victory. One week after rushing for 312 yards at Eastern Michigan, Abdulqaadir rushed for 261 yards versus the Leathernecks and scored four touchdowns. The teams combined for 1,038 yards of total offense, and 41 of the game's 106 points were scored in the fourth quarter. Chaos ensued after the game, as many Saluki fans sitting on the east side of the stadium rushed the playing field.
