The undefeated and No.3-ranked Salukis clinched their first conference title as a I-AA school and their first conference title since 1961. The win also earned SIU its first berth in the playoffs since 1983. SIU rushed for 337 yards in this game, as RB Tom Koutsos rushed for 153 yards and RB Muhammad Abdulqaadir added 120 yards. Running in the fourth quarter clinched the game as YSU closed the gap to the game's final score with 3:45 left. YSU missed a scoring opportunity early in the fourth quarter when it fumbled at the SIU 42 yard and Saluki LB Eric Egan (Henderson, Ky.) recovered. The win upped SIU's record to, 10-0, its best 10 game record since 1983. It was then the second most wins in a season in Saluki football history. Through the 2008 season, it is tied for the third most wins in a season in SIU Football history.
