This first-round playoff loss was a bitter defeat for the heavily favored Salukis, who were ranked No. 1 and seeded No. 1 in the playoff field. A crowd of 7,304 on a windy, rain-soaked 47 degree day saw the Salukis build a 17-7 halftime lead on rushing TDs by RB Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs, who carried 25 times for 166 yards, scored two more Saluki touchdowns in the second half - his final one with 2:37 left gave SIU a 31-28 lead. Eastern needed just five plays to regain the lead. Sambursky then drove SIU to the Eastern 22 before time expired. Afterward, he told reporters, "We should have won the game."
