This was one of the most exciting Homecoming games in Saluki football history as 12,326 saw the No. 15 Panthers race to a 20-0 lead late in the second quarter. Special teams keyed the comeback for the No. 1-ranked Salukis, as RB Craig Turner returned a UNI punt 58 yards for a touchdown to put SIU on the scoreboard. The Salukis did not take the lead until RB Arkee Whitlock's two-yard TD run gave them a 38-33 advantage. Southern added two more points when it sacked UNI QB Eric Sanders in the end zone for a safety. S Marlon Heaston preserved the win, when he intercepted a Sanders pass at the SIU two yardline.
