SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Salukis finished fifth in their season-opener at the Payne Stewart Memorial hosted by Missouri State. Oral Roberts, McNeese State, Missouri State, and Bradley took the top four spots ahead of Southern Illinois.
SIU shot a team total of 622, six shots behind Bradley who finished fourth with 618. Freshman Alisha Matthews led the Salukis with 152, tied for sixth overall. Senior Lauren May shot a 156, with Kate Laegeler right behind shooting a 158. Braidy Hood recorded a 160 and Freshman Meg Gilley shot a 162 to round out the lineup.
"I think our 310 and 312 were good starting points," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "I'm really happy with Alisha's scores, I'm happy with all of our scores."
The Salukis will be back in action Sept. 29-30 at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo.
"We have a lot to build on, and this is a team that will get better every time we play," Daugherty said. "We made some first tournament mistakes, but I think we stacked up right in the middle of things, knowing we're going to work on those mistakes."
