CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's golf team will kick off its fall season as it competes in the Redbird Invitational hosted by Illinois State this Saturday and Sunday.
SIU starts their fall season for the second year in a row at the Redbird Invitational and will face off in a field of 17 teams including host ISU, Bradley, Ohio University, Bowling Green State, Evansville, Drake, Detroit Mercy, Ball State, Illinois Wesleyan, Toledo, Western Illinois, UIC, Eastern Illinois, Dayton, South Dakota State, and Oakland University.
The Salukis return all five golfers from last season's squad that finished sixth overall in the Missouri Valley Conference championships in April, which was also held at Weibring Golf Club, the course for this weekend's tournament.
Cassie Rushing, the Salukis lone All-MVC selection in 2011, returns for her sophomore campaign and looks to improve upon her team-best 78.1 average from a season ago.
Co-captains Margaret Gilley and Alisha Matthews look to provide a strong top three for the Salukis, while Shaina Rennegarbe and Ashleigh Rushing complete the five returners from last year's traveling squad.
Amber Phillips and Jennfier Bernhardt are also back for another season while Ryann Gilley joins the squad as the lone freshman.
The tournament will be held at the 18 hole, par 71 Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill. A 8:30 a.m. shotgun start will kick things off both days while teams will complete a round of 36 holes on Saturday and a final 18 on Sunday.
