Hello fans and welcome to Signing Day 2013. We'll be bringing you live updates through the day on the page below. No need to refresh, as soon as we know, you'll know.
5 p.m. Coach Lennon and the staff got Raysean Golden's finished Letter of Intent "fifteen seconds before I walked in to the press conference," he said. Golden is a nose guard from Coffeyville. In his press conference, Lennon said he'll be battling for a starting spot right away. On film, he showed good quickness in the interior line as well as great pursuit sideline-to-sideline. That's a wrap on today's recruiting haul. Twenty-five players in all. A story about the signing class will be posted on SIUSalukis.com later this evening. Thanks for following along; we'll see you in spring ball.
1 p.m. One more in. John Gardner, a tight end from Chicago, has faxed everything in. Gardner went to Simeon and has great size at 6-5, 207 lbs. That pushes the overall class to 24 newcomers, which breaks down into seven early enrollees, five priority walk-ons and 12 NLI signees. Ten of those are from the state of Illinois. five are from Georgia, two from Missouri, two from Indiana, two from Kansas, one from Michigan, one from Tennessee and one from Mississippi.
Noon There's been a little bit of a lull, but the fax machine is starting to heat up again. Markese Jackson, a linebacker from East St. Louis just sent us his fax. He's the fifth priority walk-on and the last walk-on expected for now. Still have a couple more NLIs to go before we wrap up this blog and get ready for Coach Lennon's 3:30 press conference.
11 a.m. Watson is a fullback from Rochester, where he won a pair of state titles. Impressive all-around athlete, who recorded 69 tackles as a linebacker and also plays baseball. And the newest member of the Saluki family is a local recruit, Dakota Upchurch. The Harrisburg, Ill., native put together an impressive senior season (97 tackles, 13 sacks). If you're in the area, you should check him out on the hardwood, where he starts for the state's No. 1 ranked 2A team.
10:45 a.m. Bryce Beschorner has accepted his offer of admission. Beschorner is the fourth priority walk-on to join the team so far, joining Josh Jahnke, Reed Watson and Cameron Walter. Beschorner is a WR from Algonquin, Ill.
10 a.m. Here's a photo of Olsen signing up to be a Saluki.
9:45 a.m. It's a waiting game for our last few to trickle in. Austin Olsen's NLI came through. Olsen is a 6-5 offensive lineman. Recruiting coordinator Jim Jackson was certainly excited to see that fax come through. "Austin Olsen is officially on board!!! 3 Sport athlete who we had in camp! Monster updside!" he tweeted @CoachJimJackson.
9:15 a.m. Chandler Shantz's NLI is in. Shantz is a dual-threat quarterback from Kansas. His three-year record as a starter: 33-4. Not bad. Shantz had 3,500 passing yards and 1,700 rushing yards in his career.
9 a.m. Three more Salukis in the fold. Ki-Jana Evans, Marcus Miller and Brandon Minor are all set to become Salukis next season. Evans is a offensive lineman from Chicago, Ill. Miller and Minor will both help on the defensive side of the ball. Minor is a linebacker and Miller is a safety.
8:30 a.m. There's two more. Josh Jahnke and Cameron Walter have accepted their offers of admission and will join the team as priority walk-ons.
8:15 a.m. Kenny James has joined the Saluki family. James is a 5-11, 200-pound safety from Columbia, Mo. We expect a couple more to come in shortly.
7:45 a.m. Our fourth Letter of Intent is in. Garrett Pougnet, a 6-3 wide receiver from Fenton, Mich., has everything faxed in and approved.
7:30 a.m. It was a close one, but punter Nick Neidig (6-3, 205, Wadesville, Ind.) was the first member of the 2013 recruiting class to get his Letter of Intent faxed in. Also officially joining the Salukis are defensive linemen Antony Greenhow (6-3, 230, Chicago, Ill.) and Khari Waithe-Alexander (6-2, 240, Stephenson, Ga.)
7:15 a.m. Check out all our mid-year signees below. Exciting group that should be fun to watch as we head into spring ball. Our first NLI is in! We'll get it posted as soon as we have the go-ahead.
