Little Rock, Ark. -- The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team turned in a dominating performance Saturday afternoon against Arkansas-Little Rock and Ouachita Baptist. The women bested Ouachita Baptist, 192-43 while defeating MVC newcomer Arkansas-Little Rock, 177-60. The Saluki men won their matchup over Ouachita Baptist, 158-62.
The Salukis combined to take 21-of-26 events on the day. The men and women won nine races each while the diving squad took three events.
"With this being the first meet after a long break, I felt our athletes responded by swimming their races well," said head coach Rick Walker. "We performed under less than perfect conditions and picked up a good win over our new conference foe."
Helena Amorim highlighted the day for the Saluki women. Amorim won three individual events on the day including the 1000-yard freestyle (10:39.67), 200 freestyle (1:59.05), and the 500 freestyle (5:10.53). Isabela Castro picked up wins in the 200 backstroke (2:07.87) and the 200 IM (2:12.70). Freshman Sarah James won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.57.
Senior Oleg Rabota won both the 200 freestyle (1:43.81) and the 200 backstroke (1:54.17). Shaun Wolfe took the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.55. Olaf Meller took first in the 100 freestyle (47.35) and finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.62.
The Saluki men and women swept their relay events for the day. Sarah James, Holly Johnson, Luisa Silveira and Castro took the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:48.54, while Pamela Benitez , Shailey Brumley, Johnson and Silveira took the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.73).
Andres Saavedra, Calvin Kolar, Dusan Vukobrat, and Wolfe won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:35.31 while Meller, Pallmann, Wolfe and Saavedra took the 200 freestyle relay by two seconds over an Ouachita Baptist relay team (1:25.13).
Diving took 3-of-4 events on the day. Esther Chen won the 1-meter event (319.88) and Cheri Zhang won the 3-meter dive (345.53) on the women's side. Kegan Skelton took the 1-meter dive on the men's side with a score of 329.10.
SIU will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Champaign for a dual meet with Illinois and Olivet Nazarene.
