BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team traveled to Bowling Green, Ky. on Saturday to take on the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky.
Despite picking up ten event wins as a team, the Salukis fell to the Hilltoppers on both the men's and women's sides. The women were outscored 131-105, while the men lost by a 138-99 count.
Antonio Santoro picked up SIU's first win of the day in the 200-yard freestyle where he posted a time of 1:40.66.
Therese Mattsson claimed the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.45 seconds. Dennis Hedo won the event on the men's side with a time of 21.52 seconds and teammate Stephan Ackermann followed in second place with a time of 21.59 seconds.
Santoro collected his second event victory of the day in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.87.
Mattsson was victorious a second time on the day in the 100-yard freestyle, winning the event with a time of 52.24. Isabel Madeira followed Mattsson in second place with a time of 53.45 seconds. Hedo won the event on the men's side for his second victory of the day with a time of 46.19 seconds.
Julie Ju won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:00.17, breaking the WKU pool record of 5:02.43 which was s et by Amanda Taylor of Louisville in 2005.
Ju collected another win in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:18.32, which also broke a WKU pool record of 2:21.05 set by WKU's Cassie Fahrlender in 2005. Marcela Teixeira came in second in the event with a time of 2:24.72.
The SIU relay teams swept the 400-yard freestyle relays, taking the top-two spots on both the men's and women's sides. For the men, Fedo, Anthony Bousquet, Tim Silkaitis and Gareth McGee posted a 3:06.70 to win the race. For the women, Madeira, Emily Duerringer, Tovah Gasparovich and Ju won the event with a time of 3:33.28.
