CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's and women's swimming and diving teams cruised to dual wins over Evansville Saturday afternoon. The men's team won 186-45 and the women won 156.5-86.5. The meet was the final outing for both teams before their respective conference championships.
"I really liked our outlook today," head coach Rick Walker said. "Evansville is a great program, and we have a lot of respect for them. I'm excited to see what our athletes can do in their conference championships."
The Salukis won the meet's first six events and won 24 of 26 events overall on the team's Senior Day at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium. The men's and women's teams opened the meet with relay wins in the 100 and 200 yard medleys.
Seniors Pamela Benitez and Shailey Brumley teamed up with Kristina Ksarjian and Ella Otto to win the 100 freestyle relay (46.79) while Oleg Rabota, Calvin Kolar, Dusan Vukobrat and Till Pallmann won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.73.
Kristian Troxel won the 1000 free (10:02.09), Shaun Wolfe took first place in the 50 free (21.44), while Andy Ross won the 200 IM (2:00.75). Senior Isabela Castro won the 100 IM with a time of 1:02.20, Kolar won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.28 while Saluki senior Jeffrey Chen took second place with a time of 1:00.65.
The SIU divers swept the springboards for the sixth time this year. Kaixuan Zhang swept the one and three-meter dive with scores of 345.00 and 372.90. Fellow Salukis Esther Chen and Brittany Weigel finished second and third respectively. On the men's side Kegan Skelton took the one-meter dive (358.35) and the three-meter dive with a score of 364.43.
The women will be in action next when Southern hosts the MVC Championships from Feb. 13-15 at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium in the SIU Rec Center. The men's team will compete in the MAC Championships, from March 6-8, in Buffalo, N.Y.
