CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team sent nine swimmers to A Finals on the second day of preliminaries for the MVC Championships. Hannah Pinion picked up right were she left off; after setting an MVC record in the 200 individual medley on Thursday, Pinion swam the fastest 400 IM time by more than three seconds in the preliminaries.
Kirsten Groome, who owns the Championship record in the 400 IM, posted the fourth-fastest time and will join Pinion in the A Final. The Salukis sent three swimmers to the A Final in the 100 butterfly, more than any other school. Isabela Castro and Charlotte Davies finished second and third, respectively. Rachael Barry posted the seventh-best time.
In the 100 breaststroke, Kristin Geppert finished with the second best time. Geppert is a two-time defending MVC champion in the event. She will be joined by Melissa Larocque in the A Final. Holly Johnson and Susan Minkel posted the top two times for the B Final.
The second night of finals gets underway tonight, starting at 6 p.m. in the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium.
