CARBONDALE, Ill. - The SIU women's swimming and diving team is in third place after two days of the MVC Championships. The Salukis sit nine points behind Illinois State, who is in second.
Hannah Pinion dominated the 400 individual medley. After a close start, Pinion dominated the breaststroke and cruised to a victory by more than five seconds. Her time was the second-fastest time in the MVC Championship history, second to only Kirsten Groome's time two years ago. Groome finished seventh in the event. Jessica Anderson and Jessica England also scored in the event for the Salukis in the B Final.
SIU started off the finals with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay. In the 100 fly, the Salukis placed three swimmers in the top eight. Isabela Castro and Charlotte Davies placed second and third, respectively, and Rachael Barry finished eighth.
In the 200 freestyle, Pamela Benitez finished third, just a hundredth of a second behind the second-place finisher. Jill Weckbach and Luisa Silveira also scored for SIU in the B Final. In the 100 breaststroke, Kristin Geppert finished in second, just a second away from winning a third consecutive MVC title in the 100 breaststroke. Melissa Larocque finished seventh, and Holly Johnson and Susan Minkel scored in the B Final.
The final day of the Championships is Saturday. The preliminaries start at 10 a.m. and the finals will begin at 4 p.m.
