CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's swimming and diving team sent four swimmers to A Finals and 11 more swimmers to tonight's B Finals at the Mid-American Conference Championship. Tonight's finals session starts at 7 p.m. at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium in the SIU Rec Center.
The meet started out with the 400-yard individual medley. Thomas Defay qualified for his second A Final of the Championship with his time in the event (3:58.51), which was good for the seventh-fastest time in the preliminaries. The Salukis placed two in the B Final in the event. Csaba Gercsak made his second B Final of the Championship and Caleb Coots will score for the first time in his career.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Southern placed three swimmers in the B Final. Matt Frey (49.79) finished 11th overall and third in the B Final. Shaun Wolfe (50.06) will have the fifth-fastest time entering tonight's B Final, and Jacob Lucheon (50.41) also will score in the event for SIU.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Till Pallmann qualified for the A Final and posted the fifth-fastest time in the prelims (1:38.28). Olaf Meller (1:40.65) and Esteavo Andrade (1:41.03) will swim in the B Final.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Calvin Kolar qualified for the A Final and fell three-hundreths of a second short of the pool-record time in the event. Shaun Wolfe (58.61) and Andrew Spencer (58.78) qualified for the B Final in the event.
In three-meter diving, Kegan Skelton snuck into the A Final in the eight and final spot. Skelton scored a 301.80 and will look to move up in the evening's finals session.
