CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving teams opened the season with the Saluki Miler on Friday. Pamela Benitez and Till Pallmann won the miles for the women and men, respectively.
Benitez dominated the women's mile, winning in 17:07.50. She won the event by 38 seconds over second-place Cecelia Holmes of Illinois State. The Redbirds, a women-only team, were the competition for SIU in the season-opening event. Hannah Pinion (18:08.88) finished fifth and Charlotte Davies (18:18.56) finished seventh for the SIU women.
The men's side competed with themselves. Newcomer Till Pallmann (16:13.86) won the event, beating 2012 Olympian Csaba Gercsak (16:27.26). Olaf Meller (16:52.16), Caleb Coots (17:15.40), Oleg Rabota (17:20.72), Eddy Lynk (18:06.25) and George Minkel (18:12.06) also competed for the SIU men.
The meet also featured the 400-yard individual medley. Illinois State's Cecilia Holmes won the women's side with a time of 4:37.43. SIU's Charlotte Davies finished right behind with a time of 4:40.56. Hannah Pinion (4:45.39) and Melissa Larocque (5:06.13) finished fifth and seventh, respectively, for SIU.
The Salukis turn around and compete tomorrow morning, Saturday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. for the Open Water 5K. The event is at the campus lake and is free to the public.
