    CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving teams wrapped up day one of competition against Kentucky and Missouri Thursday night at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium.

    SIU faced its toughest opponents of the season in Kentucky and Missouri, both finished the 2012-13 season ranked in the top 25 in the nation.

    On the women's side, the Salukis picked up eight top-five finishes on the night. Sarah James, Holly Johnson, Isabela Castro and Pamela Benitez started the day finishing third in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:56.11.

    Helena Amorim placed fourth in the 1650-yard freestyle while Luisa Silveira finished third in the 50-yard freestyle (23.94).

    Pamela Benitez picked up the first win for the Salukis on the day when she claimed the 500-yard freestyle by two hundredths of a second over Kentucky's Kendal Casey with a time of 4:57.68. Benitez finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.67).

    On the men's side, Till Pallmann picked up a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.42) and a third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:31.93). Calvin Kolar finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.15).

    The Saluki relay team (Andrade, Sanchez, Rabota, Pallmann) capped off the night with a third place finish in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:06.77.

    SIU's Kaixuan Zhang won the 3-meter dive (334.25) for the team's second event victory of the competition, while teammates Fengting Chen finished third (292.75) and Brittany Weigel took fifth (253.60). Kegan Skelton placed fourth in the men's 1-meter dive (280.55).

    The Salukis will wrap up the tri-meet Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the Rec Center.
