ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team wrapped up the Henderson Invitational hosted by Henderson State Saturday. The Salukis won a combined championship events over the two-day competition.
SIU relay teams highlighted the event, winning a combined six events, four on the women's side, and two on the men's side.
Junior Hannah Pinion picked up wins in the 400 IM (4:39.45) and the 200 IM (2:12.75) while Ella Otto won the 200- freestyle (1:57.51) and finished second in the 100- freestyle with a time of 54.05. James won both the 100- and 200- backstrokes on the day while Brumley finished first in the 50- freestyle.
On the men's side, Andres Saavedra, Eric Sparks, Nathan Ray and Calvin Kolar teamed up to win the 200- (1:26.49) and 400- (3:11.52) freestyle relays. Kolar won the 100- freestyle (47.50) while Saavedra took the 50- freestyle (21.65). George Minkel finished second in the 50- free with a time of 22.13.
"We had a final push to compete under tough conditions and they're tired and have been challenged," said head coach Rick Walker. "Now we will set our sites on our mid-season meets, but they are more than ready for some rest, and they deserve it."
Southern will be back in action Nov. 22-24 when they travel to Columbia, Mo. for the Missouri Invite.
