EVANSTON, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University swimming & diving teams placed 14 swimmers in Sunday's Super Finals at the Northwestern TYR Invitational to finish second in both divisions.
The men's team tallied 822 points in the three-day event, finished second only to host Northwestern and their 1,275 points. Michigan State finished third with 742 points while Kenyon finished fourth with 735.
In the women's competition, Northwestern finished first with 1,203.5 points, followed by SIU with 886. Michigan State (844.5) and Kenyon (631) followed at third and fourth, respectively.
Ju finished second in the 100 Free with a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 50.91. Her time is also good enough for fifth all-time at SIU.
Santoro turned in a similar performance as he finished second in the 200 Fly with a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 1:47.46, a mark also good enough for fifth all-time at SIU.
In the women's events, Kelly Dvorak got things going for the Salukis as she finished second in the 200 Back with a time of 2:05.03.
SIU then placed two swimmers in the 100 Free Super Final. Ju led with her runner-up finish and was followed by Therese Mattsson, coming in fourth overall with a time of 51.73.
Nora Bunford was tops for SIU in the 200 Breast, finishing third with a time of 2:20.69.
The Salukis again stepped up in the 200 Fly, placing two swimmers in the Super Final. Rachel Winius finished third with a time of 2:06.41 and was followed by Abby Blank in fourth with a time of 2:06.69.
The Salukis finished second in the day's only relay, the 400 Free Relay. The team of Isabel Madeira, Jaquez, Mattsson and Ju finished with a time of 3:27.44.
In the men's competition, Southern Illinois got things going right away, placing two swimmers in the Super Final in the day's first two events.
SIU did it again in the 100 Free with Stephan Ackermann and Vinicius Waked laying the one-two punch. Ackermann finished second with a time of 45.59 while Waked followed in fourth with a time of 46.02.
In the men's 400 Free Relay, the team of Ackermann, Waked, Dennis Hedo and McGee took runner-up honors with a time of 3:01.12.
With the Northwestern TYR Invitational in the books, the Southern Illinois swimming & diving teams will take some time off until the team's winter training trip. Select member so the Saluki squads, however, will travel to West Lafayette, Ind. on Nov. 30 - Dec. 2 for the U.S. Open, hosted by Purdue University.
