CHICAGO, Ill. - The Southern Illinois swimming and diving team finished its fall season Sunday at the Phoenix Fall Classic hosted by the University of Chicago. The Saluki men finished third out of 10 teams while the women took fourth of eight.
The three-day event featured Division II and NAIA schools William Jewell College, Hope College, Wheaton College, Lincoln College, North Central College, Robert Morris University as well as host school, University of Chicago.
Junior Ella Otto picked two wins for the Saluki women at the Classic, putting her at four wins on the season. The Stuttgart, Germany native won both the 100 (57.95) and 200 (2:03.68) backstroke events as well as picking up a third place finish in the 200 freestyle.
"We've been waiting for her to step up and she has done a great job getting prepared and is swimming really fast now," said head coach Rick Walker. "She (Otto) was a leader the whole meet, and it's good to see her hard work pay off."
Morgan Timms and Kristy Hinkle finished second and third in he 100 and 200 backstroke events, respectively. Timms finished with a time of 58.28 in the 100 and in 2:04.74 in the 200 while Hinkle went for 58.89 in the 100 and 2:05.89 in the 200.
Senior George Minkel took third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.65.
Evan Wiedeman picked up a fourth place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:52.76). Eric Sparks claimed fourth place in the 50 free with a time of 21.86 and Minkel took fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:43.65).
On the men's relay side, Nathan Ray, Wiedeman, Sparks and Minkel picked up second place finishes in the 200 (1:25.53) and 400 (3:10.99) freestyles.
"Chicago really packed a punch -- they are really good and had kids getting season times in almost every race," said Walker. "I'm really excited to see what this will do for team rankings when it comes to the conference tournaments."
