Swimming and Diving wraps up Mizzou Invitational

    COLUMBIA, Mo. - Southern Illinois men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished third and seventh, respectively, as competition concluded at the University of Missouri Tiger Invitational Sunday.

    Mizzou swept top honors in the three-day meet, posting decisive team scores on both the men's and women's sides.

    The Salukis came out strong on the final day, with Kirsten Groome taking first place in the 1650 free by nearly 10 seconds. El Badrawi finished eighth for the men.

    Therese Mattsson fell just short of the top-five in the 100 free, capturing a sixth-place finish at 51.35. Anthony Bousquet finished ninth for the men with a time of 46.57.

    Senior Jameson Kuper continued his solid performance on the weekend, finishing third in the 200 breast swimming 2:02.72, good for 16 points for SIU.

    The tandem of Matt Parsons and Matt Kruse finished sixth and seventh in the 200 fly to round out the meet's individual races.

    The top Saluki men's and women's relay teams finished fifth and tenth in the final race of the day, the 400 free relay.

    With the 2009 portion of its schedule now complete, SIU will return to the pool Jan. 23, opening the year with a conference dual meet at Missouri State. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
