Eight members of the Saluki men's swimming and diving team were selected as Distinguished Scholar Athletes by the Mid-American Conference on Friday. The Salukis had the most athletes earn the accolade of all men's swimming teams in the conference.
The 2015-16 season for the Saluki men's and women's swimming and diving teams was one for the books. With several additions to the SIU record book, national rankings throughout the season and a down-to-the-wire conference championship title, this season was undoubtedly one of SIU's best.
Twenty-one members of the Saluki women's swimming and diving team were named to the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, the conference announced Tuesday. SIU holds the most spots on the team of all seven schools in the conference, with all but eight members of the squad earning scholar-athlete recognition.
Twelve members of SIU's men's swimming and diving team were named to the Academic All-MAC team on Friday. Southern Illinois had the third-most student-athletes receive academic honors in the conference. Sixty-nine athletes from the MAC's seven teams earned the recognition.
Kaixuan `Sherry' Zhang's season came to an end on Friday when an injury sustained during a dive at the Zone C Diving meet caused her to withdraw from the meet. Due to the injury, Zhang will not be competing at the NCAA Championships, concluding her career as a Saluki.
