Jan. 29, 2013
ST. LOUIS - Pamela Benitez has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. The honor is the third of her career for Benitez and the fourth weekly honor for SIU swimmers and divers this season.
Benitez won all three events she was a part of on Saturday in a double dual with Washinton (Mo.) and Rhodes College, setting pool records in two of those events. She set her first pool record of the day in the 5900-yard freestyle, winning in a time of 4:58.75. Her time was 12 seconds better than her closest competitor.
She also won the 200-yard freestyle by seven seconds, with a time of 1:51.61. She served as the anchor on the pool-record setting 200-yard freestyle relay team, swimming a split of 23.92. The relay team's record setting time was 1:36.58.
This is the third MVC Swimmer of the Week nod of Benitez's career. Benitez joined the team in the spring of 2012 and promptly won the weekly honor twice in a row before the Conference Championships, where she earned first-team All-Conference recognition and placed in the top three in all three of her individual events. She has already won 20 individual events in 34 individual races, winning 59 percent of the events she's entered in.
Benitez is the third Saluki to earn MVC Swimmer or Diver of the Week this season, joining Hannah Pinion and Sherry Zhang. Zhang earned MVC Diver of the Week on Nov. 7. Two weeks later, Pinion and Zhang made it a weekly sweep of the MVC Swimmer and Diver of the Week after events at the Phoenix Fall Classic and Purdue Invitational
Tha Salukis are back in action on Feb. 2, hosting Evansville in a dual meet at Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium in the SIU Rec Center. The meet is free to attend and is set to start at 1 p.m.
