ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois swept the weekly Missouri Valley Conference swimming and diving awards, the conference announced Tuesday. Pamela Benitez earned MVC Swimmer of the Week while Kaixuan Zhang earned MVC Diver of the Week.
Pamela Benitez paced the Salukis with two wins on Saturday versus Evansville in SIU’s 156.5-86.5 win over the Aces. In what was her final regular season meet as a Saluki, the senior won the both the 500 and 250-yard freestyles.
The El Salvador native finished the 500 free six seconds better than SIU teammate Helena Amorim (5:04.98) while taking first in the 250 with a time of 2:28.23.
Zhang swept both the one and three-meter contests on Saturday. The Hu Bei native took the one meter contest by 34 points with a score of 345.00, breaking a school record (6 dives) that was set in 1985.
Zhang also broke the pool record (6 dives) that was set in 2007 by Christina Curaneanu (SIU). The sophomore scored a 372.90 in the three-meter dive, falling just short of the school she set earlier in the year at the Missouri Invitational. The nod is the fourth fourth this season for Zhang.
The Salukis will be back in action Feb. 13-15 when they host the MVC Championships at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium inside the SIU Rec Center.
