CARBONDALE, Ill. - The 2008 State Farm/Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off this morning with preliminaries in three events.
In the first event of the day, the 500-yard freestyle, Julie Ju took first place with a time of 5:01.35. Also qualifying for SIU were Lisa Jaquez (8th, 5:15.04), Karin Mullendore (11th, 5:15.18), Keli Kramer (12th, 5:17.37). Kasey Fernandez (19th, 5:22.89) and Jenna Helm (24th, 5:29.51) both qualified for the C finals, which are for time only and cannot win the event.
In the 200-yard individual medley Tracy Deyell of Illinois State took first with a time of 2:06.53. Moving on to the A finals for SIU was Danielle Quarry with a time of 2:10.36 for a fifth-place finish. Abby Blank (9th, 2:11.87), Kelly Dvorak (10th, 2:11.95) and Samantha Dvorak (13th, 2:15.55) qualified for the B finals. Lindsey Smith will participate in the C finals following her 22nd-place finish with a time of 2;23.93.
Missouri State's Jordan Hawkins took first-place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.48 seconds. For SIU, Therese Mattsson (2nd, 24.10), Isabel Madeira (3rd, 24.15) and Tovah Gasparovich (6th, 24.73) qualified for the A finals. Emily Duerringer (10th, 25.00) and Rachael Slattery (t-11th, 25.12) will compete for SIU in the B finals. Moving on to C fianls for the Salukis are Natalie McLean (22nd, 27.36) and Kristina Palacios (24th, 28.30)
