MVC Swimming & Diving Championship set to begin

    CARBONDALE, Ill. - Months of hard work and training come to an end for swimmers and divers from across the Missouri Valley Conference this week as athletes from Missouri State, Northern Iowa, Illinois State and Evansville travel to Carbondale, Ill. for the 2006 MVC Swimming & Diving Championship.

    In the 2006 pre-championship coaches poll, Missouri State took the top spot with 25 points and all five first-place votes.

    Southern Illinois came in second with 19 points, followed by Illinois State with 14.

    Evansville and Northern Iowa picked up 12 and five, respectively, to fill out the final two positions.

    Being conducted concurrently with the MVC Championship is the MVC Invitational.

    The MVC Invitational is a three-team men's meet, pitting the three Valley schools that sponsor men's swimming (Southern Illinois, Missouri State and Evansville) against one another.

    Action for both meets begins at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 16 in the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium at the SIU Rec Center.

    Events will run all day Thursday, continue Friday and wind down Saturday with the last of the 42 events.

    Preliminaries begin each day at 10 a.m., with finals getting started at 6 p.m. Final heats scheduled for Saturday begin at 5 p.m.
