CARBONDALE, Ill. - The 2008 State Farm/Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships continued this morning with preliminaries in five events.
Illinois State's Tracy Deyell finished in first in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:32.39 to start the day. Qualifying for the A finals for Southern Illinois were Abby Blank (4th, 4:37.98), Lisa Jaquez (5th, 4:38.47) and Danielle Quarry (7th, 4:41.38). SIU's Jenna Helm qualified for the C bonus finals with a time of 4:59.11.
Missouri State swept the top-three spots in the 100-yard butterfly with Chelsea Dirks-Ham (1st, 57.64), Breanna Hollar (2nd, 58.39) and Andi Rojas-Jimenz (3rd, 58.43). SIU qualified Kasey Fernandez (4th, 58.49), Samantha Dvorak (9th, 59.49) and Marcela Teixeira (10th, 59.93) for the finals. SIU's Lindsey Smith (18th, 1:04.93) and Natalie McLean (19th, 1:05.68) for the C bonus finals in the event.
SIU's Therese Mattsson finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.45, which broke her previous meet record of 1:51.61 set at last year's championships. Also qualifying for the A finals for SIU were Isabel Madeira (3rd, 1:53.85), Emily Duerringer (6th, 1:56.48), Karin Mullendore (7th, 1:57.35) and Tovah Gasparovich (8th, 1:57.84).
MSU's Hawkins finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.64 seconds. Kelly Dvorak (2nd, 56.96) and Rachael Slattery (14th, 1:00.98) also qualified for finals for SIU. Kristina Palacios qualified for the C bonus finals with a time of 1:11.04.
Finals for the five events as well as the 200-yard medley relay, the 800-yard freestyle relay and 3-meter diving will begin tonight at 6 p.m. at the SIU Student Recreation Center.
