ST. LOUIS -- Parker Zimmerman of Wichita State University and Kaixuan "Cheri" Zhang of Southern Illinois University have been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Wednesday. Zimmerman and Zhang were honored for their performances during the period of February 10-16.
Now in its 15th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
Kaixuan Zhang was named the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the Year after setting MVC records in both the 1- and 3-meter dives at the MVC Championships this past weekend. Zhang dominated both diving events. She scored a 346.25 in the 1-meter dive, which beat the previous MVC record by 22 points. In the 3-meter dive, Zhang shattered her own MVC record by more than 87 points, scoring a 439.40. In addition to MVC Championship records, the scores set school and pool records.
Zhang's selection marks the third-straight week a Southern Illinois student-athlete has earned MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors after Anthony Beane earned the distinction on the men's side each of the last two weeks.
Sophomore catcher Parker Zimmerman helped the Shockers to a 3-0 weekend with a sweep over SIUE. Zimmerman went 6-for-12 (.500) with three runs, three doubles, two RBI, a walk and a hit by pitch. He also had a perfect fielding percentage in 35 total chances behind the plate. He also threw out a runner trying to steal second. He caught every inning of all three games and helped guide the pitching staff to a 0.67 ERA on the weekend.
The staff allowed just 17 hits in 27 innings pitched with seven walks and 32 strikeouts. In game one against SIUE, he went 1-for-4 with a run and in game two he went 1-for-3. In the finale against the Cougars, he went 4-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and three doubles. The four hits and three doubles were both career-highs. Zimmerman holds a 3.86 grade-point average in exercise science.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
