ST. LOUIS - Ten Southern Illinois swimmers and divers earned a spot on the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team, the conference announced Monday. Jessica Anderson, Shailey Brumley and Ella Otto all have maintained perfect 4.0 GPAs and are the only three qualifiers in the conference with perfect GPAs.
"What a joy it is to watch serious athletes do what they do as serious students," head coach Rick Walker said. "It's a testament to our athletes and unbelievable academic staff. Kristina Therriault-Stepps and her staff have done an incredible job reaching our athletes and helping them reach their potential academically."
The honor goes to Valley athletes that have competed at an MVC institution more than one year and obtained a 3.2 GPA and All-Cofnerence honors, a 3.5 cumulative GPA and a top-16 finish in an event at the MVC Championship, or a 3.8 GPA and participation in the MVC Championship. Of Southern's 18 eligible swimmers and divers, 10 qualified for the 52-member team.
The honor is the latest in a series of academic achievements for the swimming and diving program. Brumley earned the Valley's Elite 18 Award at the MVC Championship, which went to the A Finalist with the highest cumulative GPA. She was the first Saluki swimmer to earn the award.
Both the men's and women's programs earned National All-America Teams for holding cumulative team GPAs above 3.0. The men's team holds a 3.33 cumulative GPA, which is eighth nationally among men's Division I swimming and diving programs.
