CLEVELAND, Ohio - Seven Southern Illinois swimmers earned Academic All-Conference honors from the Mid-American Conference, the conference announced Wednesday. Jared Bradd, Matt Kruse, Matt Parsons and Justin Wolfe all earned first-team recognition. Jeffrey Chen, Nathan Day and Jake Lucheon all earned honorable mention laurels. Southern's four first-team honorees were the second most in the seven-team conference.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered.
FIRST-TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTIONS
Jared Bradd is a senior who holds a 3.38 GPA in mechanical engineering. He was a member of the 200 freestyle relay team that set the MAC Championship record at the 2012 MAC Championships. He finished seventh and eighth in the 100 and 50 freestyle, respectively at the MAC Championships. Bradd was an honorable mention Academic All-MAC selection last year.
Matt Kruse is a senior who holds a 3.79 GPA in recreation. He finished seventh in the 500 freestyle and 15th in the 200 butterfly at the 2012 MAC Championships. This is the third consecutive year he has earned first-team Academic All-Conference honors. He was an All-Conference performer in both 2010 and 2011.
Matt Parsons is a senior who holds a 3.77 GPA in political science. He was a first-team All-MAC selection in 2012. He won the 200 butterfly at the MAC Championships and finished 12th in the 500 freestyle. He won 10 events in 2011-12. With the honor, Parsons earns Academic All-Conference honors for the third consecutive year. He is also a three-time first-team All-Conference swimmer.
Justin Wolfe is a junior who holds a 3.362 GPA in mechanical engineering. Wolfe won nine events on the year. He was part of the 200 freestyle relay team that set the MAC Championship record at the 2012 MAC Championships. He won the 100 freestyle and finished second in the 200 butterfly at the 2012 MAC Championships. Wolfe is a two-time first-team All-Conference swimmer. Wolfe was an honorable mention Academic All-Conference selection last year.
HONORABLE MENTION ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTIONS
Jeffrey Chen is a sophomore with a 3.76 GPA in chemistry. He competed in 10 meets. He competed in the 200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke at the MAC Championships, finishing 17th in the 100 breaststroke.
Nathan Day is a senior with a 3.62 GPA in aviation management. He was the lone Saluki diver honored. He won the one-meter dive in the Ball State dual and the three-meter dive in the dual with Evansville. He qualified for zone diving and placed 12th in both the one- and three-meter dives at the 2012 MAC Championships.
Jake Lucheon is a sophomore with a 3.7 GPA in exercise science. He competed in 10 meets on the season. He swam the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly at the MAC Championships, placing 13th in the 100 fly.
