CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois men's and women's swimming and diving programs earned Scholar All-America honors by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for the spring 2012 semester. Both teams earned the same honor for the fall semester, as well.
"I am extremely proud that our athletes take seriously their responsibilities in the classroom when I demand so much in the pool," head coach Rick Walker said. "Our academic staff does such a tremendous job keeping our athletes focused on why they are here: education."
The men's team posted a 3.18 GPA in the spring 2012 semester, good for the 32nd-best GPA in the country. The women's team posted a 3.32 GPA to also earn recognition. The award is given out to any Division I team with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
Seven women earned Scholar All-Missouri Valley Conference recognition in 2011-12, led by Jessica Anderson, who was one of two MVC swimmers to maintain a perfect 4.0 GPA. Kristin Geppert earned Academic All-District honors in 2011-12 for the second consecutive year for maintaining a 3.97 GPA and earning All-Conference recognition in the pool.
Seven men earned Academic All-Mid-American Conference recognition in 2011-12. Matt Parsons and Justin Wolfe led the way, posting 3.77 and 3.6 GPAs in political science and mechanical engineering, respectively. Both won individual conference titles at the MAC Championships.
