ST. LOUIS - Pamela Benitez has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. The honor is the fifth of her career and the first weekly honor for SIU swimmers and divers this season.
The San Salvador, El Salvador native won all three events she was a part of on Saturday in the Salukis season opener at Evansville.
She started the meet by winning the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:22.82, over six seconds faster than fellow Saluki Helena Amorim. She also won the 200-yard freestyle by three seconds, with a time of 1:52.77.
In her final event of the day, Benitez helped secure the Salukis' 138-105 win over the Aces by posting a time of 5:02.64 in the 500-yard freestyle.
The Salukis are back in action on Oct. 24-25, when they host Kentucky and Missouri in a dual meet at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium in the SIU Rec Center. The meet is set to start at 6 p.m. on Friday and continue at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
