ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois freshman diver Cheri Zhang earned Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. Zhang set a Dr. Edward J. Shea pool record in the three-meter dive on Saturday, scoring a 346.05 in a dual meet with Missouri State on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Zhang won swept the one- and three-meter dive in the meet. She scored her first win of the day with a 24-point win in the one-meter dive, scoring a 284.75. In the three-meter dive, Zhang scored a 346.05, setting a pool record and winning by more than 80 points.
Her dives nearly helped the Saluki women top five-time defending MVC champion Missouri State. The Salukis lost the dual matchup by a single point, 122-121.
Zhang shared the conference honor with Illinois State diver and reigning MVC Diver of the Year Wenting Zhang, who won all four of her diving events over the weekend.
The Salukis are back in action on Nov. 16-18, when the team splits up for the Phoenix Fall Classic and the Purdue Invitational.
