ST. LOUIS -- The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Swimming and Diving program will join the Missouri Valley Conference as an affiliate member in women’s swimming and diving effective immediately, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. UALR joins current institutions Evansville, Illinois State, Missouri State, UNI and Southern Illinois and will compete at the MVC Swimming and Diving Championship held annually in Carbondale, Ill.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for our program joining the Missouri Valley,” UALR Head Coach Amy Bur-gess remarked. “It is a great conference with a good outlook for the future, especially in swimming and diving. We are very grateful for the affiliate membership and hope to raise the level of competition within the confer-ence. “
Swimming and Diving becomes the third current Valley sponsored sport to include an affiliate member.
Southern Illinois Edwardsville and Central Arkansas compete as affiliate members in Valley Men’s Soccer, and Dallas Baptist will enter its first year as a participant in MVC Baseball for the upcoming 2014 season. UALR has previously been an affiliate member in the MVC (in women’s soccer in 1998 and 1999).
“The Missouri Valley Conference is proud to extend affiliate membership to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock,” noted Elgin. “The addition of the Trojan swimming program will enhance the championship experi-ence for our student-athletes who compete in women’s swimming and diving and will help make the champion-ship more robust with an increase in competitors.”
The MVC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship will take place Feb. 13-15, 2014, in Carbondale.
