ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois freshman swimmer Hannah Pinion has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Pinion placed in the top 15 in five events over three days, three solo events and two relays at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational.
Pinion anchored the 800 freestyle relay team that finished third. Her best individual finish was a sixth place finish in the 400 individual medley, where she swam a 4:27.59. She led off the 200 medley relay team that finished ninth. On the final day of competition, Pinion added two more top-15 finishes, finishing 12th in the 200 backstroke (2:04.61) and 15th in the 200 individual medley.
Pinion is the third Saluki to be honored by the MVC this year. Kirsten Groome earned her eighth career MVC Swimmer of the Week honor on Oct. 19 after winning the 500 and 1000 freestyle in a dual meet with Missouri State. Brittany Weigel earned MVC Diver of the Week after winning the one and three-meter dives at the same event.
The Salukis have wrapped up the fall season and will compete again in mid-January. The women host Illinois for a dual meet on Jan 16, and the men will join the women in hosting a dual meet with Washington (Mo.) on Jan. 21
