    Five Salukis to compete at NCAA Outdoor Championships

    Josh Freeman (shot put), Ashley Gaston (discus, shot put), Kyle Landon (high jump), Alexus Scott (shot put) and Curtis Wideman (hammer throw) will each represent Southern at the national meet.

    Sasha Leeth enters her second season as graduate assistant coach for Saluki track & field after an illustrious career as a thrower for the Salukis.

    While at SIU, Leeth was named NCAA All-American in the hammer throw and weight throw in 2009-10, while also qualifying for both the NCAA Indoor Championships and Outdoor Championships as a junior and senior. She als earned all-MVC honors in the hammer throw as a sophomore, junior, and senior, while being named all-MVC in the weight throw all four years. Leeth ranks third all-time in SIU history in the hammer throw and weight throw.

    A native of Paris, Ill., Leeth graduated from Southern Illinois in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in administration of justice. Leeth is currently pursuing a dual masters degree in sport studies and public administration.

    2009-10: Earned NCAA All-American honors in the hammer throw with an eighth place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships...Also garnered NCAA All-American honors in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships...Named all-Missouri Valley Conference in the weight throw...Honored as the MVC Field Athlete of the Week award on March 29...Holds third longest hammer throw mark in SIU history with a distance of 206-08 (62.99m) at the SIU Spring Classic...Ranks third all-time in the weight throw with a mark of 68-02.25 (20.78m) at the MVC Indoor Championships...Notched eight top five finishes in the hammer throw, including a first place finish at the SIU Spring Classic...Finished in the top five five times in the weight throw.

    2008-09: Earned all-MVC honors in the hammer throw, in addition to being named a MVC Scholar-Athlete...Qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships after finishing second in the weight throw at the MVC Indoor Championships...Earned six Top five finishes at the weight throw in indoor competition, including a first place finish at the SASF Invitational...In outdoor competition, earned three first place and three second place finishes in the hammer throw...Advanced to the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw after placing fourth at the Mid-East Regional...Currently holds SIU's second longest distance in the hammer throw with a 201-05.

    2007-08: Garnered 2008 all-conference honors during the outdoor season after finishing third in the hammer...Qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in that event, where she finished 24th...2008 MVC Scholar-Athlete...Finished in the Top 10 on 11 occasions in seven outdoor meets... Her 183-05 throw at the MVC Outdoor meet was a career-best...Placed a season-best second in the hammer at the Spring Classic...She qualified for NCAA Regionals with a throw of 180-03 in that meet...Competed in the weight throw and shot put during the indoor season...Best finish was third in the weight throw at the Friday Night Special.

    2006-07: NCAA Outdoor Regional qualifier in the hammer throw and garnered indoor all-conference honors in the weight throw (finished third) during the 2006-07 campaign, her first full season of competition...Competed in five indoor and six outdoor meets, recording 15 Top 10 finishes in throwing events...Top finish was at the SIUE Twilight when she won the hammer throw with a season-best throw of 182-08.75...Finished fifth in the discus and hammer at the 2007 MVC Outdoor Championships...Redshirted the 2006 indoor and outdoor seasons due to injury.

    High School: Four-time all-conference, state qualifier and MVP at Paris High School...Finished seventh in the state shot put as a freshman and third in the state discus as a junior...Best shot put toss was 40-3 and top discus mark was 137-3.
