LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Saluki men's and women's weight throwers highlighted the day for the Southern Illinois track and field teams in the first day of competition Friday at the Rod McCravy Memorial, hosted by the University of Kentucky at the Nutter Fieldhouse.

Sophomore's Jeneva McCall (weight throw) and Malaikah Love (triple jump) were the two Salukis to win events Friday and SIU had eight athletes finish in the top five of the six events that took place.

Southern Illinois led the men's weight throw event, as five Salukis finished in the top 12 of 20 competitors. Sophomore J.C. Lambert was the top Dawg, finishing third with his NCAA provisional mark of 64-03.75. He became the first Saluki men's thrower to hit the provisional mark this season. Brad Foote set a new personal record (52-05.50) to finish 12th and Ryan Shumaker finished in sixth place with his seasons-best throw (60-04.50).

In the women's weight throw, four Salukis hit provisional marks and SIU had five athletes finish in the top eight. McCall, the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Female Athlete of the Week, won the event for the third straight meet. She threw 68-05.00 to beat the rest of the field by over a foot.

Gwen Berry, Rickael Roach and Sasha Leeth finished fourth-sixth, respectively in the weight throw. Those three along with McCall own four of the top six marks so far this year in the nation.
