CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University's men's and women's track and field teams won the McDonald's Invitational for the fourth time in five years Saturday at the SIU Rec Center.
SIU's men (169 points) recorded three event titles and 15 top-five finishes and the women (200 points) won five events and turned in 19 top-five performances.
On the men's side, SIU received a huge boost in the mile, shot put and 3000m run. The Salukis were second before scoring a combined 48 points in the mile and shot to take the lead.
Jason Brosseau won the mile with a time of 4:16.62, while Kyle Kirchner (4:18.01) took second and Jason Ordway (4:22.73) finished fifth. The Salukis picked up 26 of the possible 39 points in that event.
Brosseau won his second event of the day when he posted a time of 8:43.36 in the 3000m run, as the men pulled away for good.
The women were strongest in the triple jump, 60m hurdles, 800m run and 3000m run, where they scored a combined 87 points.
Malaikah Love won the triple jump with a 39-10.00 (12.14) mark, Meredith Hayes (8.51) and Terri Counts (8.93) took the top-two spots in the 60m hurdles, Toni Whitfield (2:14.92) was victorious in the 800m run and Emily Toennies won the 3000m with a season and career-best 9:57.52.
SIU returns to action at the Rod McCravy Invitational, Feb. 6-7.
