ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Saluki track and field scored four more event wins in open competition at the final day of the GVSU Big Meet hosted by Grand Valley State on Saturday, pushing its meet total to seven.

Senior Kenya Culmer claimed her second event win of the weekend in the women's open triple jump after winning the high jump invite Friday night. Culmer bested second-place finisher Lindsay Lipa (11.42m/37-05.75) by two feet with her winning leap of 12.02m (39-05.25). Freshman Alauna Ray wasn't far behind in fifth place at 11.14m (36-06.75).

Southern's success in the jumps continued with a victory in the men's open triple jump by junior transfer Luke James. James, originally from Bethel University in Tennessee, pushed his season and personal best on his winning mark of 14.47m (47-05.75) -- which remains the second-best jump in the Missouri Valley Conference this season.

The Saluki men also received two runner-up finishes in the jumps: Kemar Jones in the open high jump (2.05m/6-08.75, one-quarter inch off his PR) and Franklin Adams in the open long jump (6.88m/22-07.00).

In the men's open shot put, fellow junior transfer Jeff Stewart (Rend Lake) brought home the event crown on a personal best throw of 16.37m (53-08.50) -- which, is the exact distance he threw at Rend Lake his freshman year to set the school record. Joining Stewart in the top-third of finishers were Brian Cooper (fifth, 15.37m/50-05.25) and Saluki Football athlete Adam Clay (12th, 14.25m/46-09.00).

SIU's final event win came in the men's open pole vault, where Southern's crop of freshman had an impressive outing. Freshman Nathan Schuck won with a personal best clearance of 4.66m (15-03.50), which bested his previous PR by over one foot. Schuck was followed by three fellow freshmen who all cleared the same height (4.40m/14-05.25) for personal bests of their own: Haeden Sweetin (fourth), Henry Uslabar (seventh) and Zach Reed (eighth).

On the women's side, the distance medley relay of Mobola Rotibi, Jessica Jump, Alyssa Allison and Krista Menghini entered the SIU record books. SIU finished fourth in the event with a time of 11:48.26, which now ranks as the second-best time in school history and the third-best time in the MVC this season.

The Saluki women also had a strong showing in the open 400 meter dash, where they placed four in the top-16: Jessica Jump (third, 58.46), Tyra Wooten (ninth, 58.84 PR), McKenzie White (10th, 59.17) and Alyssa Allison (16th, 59.39 PR).

It was a run of Salukis in the women's open weight throw as well, where SIU posted two PRs that were over one foot better than their previous marks. Erin Scott (sixth, 17.94m/58-10.25 PR), Freya Block (ninth, 16.24m/53-03.50) and Abigail Plecki (12th, 16.00m/52-06.00 PR) each finished within the top-12 for SIU.

Southern finished with seven total event wins, which included three on Day One in the invitational/elite portion of the meet from Culmer (high jump invite), freshman Kyle Landon (high jump invite) and Sophia Lozano (weight throw invite elite).

"I am very pleased with the meet overall," said SIU head coach Connie Price-Smith. "We had a few really good performances over the course of our two days here, and I feel like we are heading in the right direction with conference right around the corner."

Southern will have one final tuneup before the MVC Indoor Conference Championships (Mar. 1-2) at the Friday Night Special hosted by Eastern Illinois next Friday, Feb. 21, in Charleston, Ill.
