Track & Field concludes competition at EIU Friday Night Special

    CHARLESTON, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois men's and women's track and field teams completed its competition at the EIU Friday Night Special at the Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse.

    The Saluki throwers opened competition placing second through fifth in the women's weight throw. Junior Kim Fortney was the top SIU finisher placing second overall with a throw of 64-04.50. DeAnna Price followed in third with a distance of 64-04.50. Rickael Roach and Sophia Lozano placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

    Fortney was also the top finisher for Southern in the shot put posting a mark of 51-07.75 to take third place. J.C. Lambert placed first in the men's shot put with a mark of 58-02.00. Brian Cooper followed in second place with a distance of 55-02.25.

    Collin Otto was the top Saluki finisher in the men's weight throw finishing third with a distance of 66-05.00. Bradley Sauer placed fifth with a toss of 64-00.50.

    Matt Benes competed in the 55-meter hurdles finishing sixth with a time of 7.67. Ryan Sidwell placed 11th with a time of 8.04.

    Nirupama Sunderraj (7.29) and Desiree White (7.31) competed in the women's 55-meter dash placing fourth and sixth.



    In the women's one-mile Kelsey Kaiser and Melissa McDonald tied for 17th place finishing with a time of 5:31.57.

    Nina Okafor recorded a leap of 17-08.75 to finish third among 16 in the women's long jump. Okafor also competed in the triple jump placing second (37.05.25). Rylie Bruce placed fourth (35-05.75).

    Blake Green and Jeremy Bankston competed in the men's 400-meter dash placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Green finished with a time of 51.12 and Bankston came in at 51.12. Evelyn Scott ran on the women's side finishing second (59.73).

    Friday's meet was the final tune-up for the Salukis before the Missouri Valley Championships, Feb. 25-26, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
