CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Three athletes from the Southern Illinois men's track and field team competed this weekend in a last attempt to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships taking place on March 10-12 in Boise, Idaho.
Cody Doerflein competed in the pole vault competition Friday at the Arkansas Last Chance Meet. Doerflein finished in fourth place behind competitors from Kansas and Florida State with a clearing of 16-06.75 (5.05m). Doerflein is currently is ranked 26th in the nation for the clearing of 17-04.5 that he recorded at the Missouri Valley Indoor Championships helping lead the Saluki men to the 2012 Indoor MVC title.
"It was a really exciting day for Zach and Stephen," said SIU assistant coach Matt Sparks. "They each ran really well and had a great day."
Arvanis ran in the 800-meter race trying to reach the NCAA automatic mark of 1:47.30. Arvanis finished 17th among 47 competitors clocking in at 1:50.07, now ranking him third all-time in SIU history.
Zach Dahleen had a record-setting day on the track breaking a 39-year old school record in the men's one mile. The junior finished with a time of 4:00.16 to now rank 35th in the nation.
"Zach had a really great race, he has set himself up to have a great outdoor season and will have a great senior season next year." said Sparks.
