CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Saluki track and field won two event titles at Day One of the Bill Cornell Spring Classic on Friday, where the Saluki men currently lead and the SIU women rank second in the team competition after two scored events for each squad.
Junior Curtis Wideman started the outdoor season off right with a victory in the discus. Wideman, a junior from Evanston, Ill., who was the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference discus runner-up, won on a facility-record throw of 53.00m (173-11). Sophomore Josh Freeman was right behind him in second place, where he threw a personal best mark of 50.95m (167-02) -- one inch further than Illinois State All-American Curtis Jensen (50.93m/167-01). Those two throws currently rank 33rd and 56th nationally and 18th and 26th in the NCAA West Region, respectively.
Freshman Franklin Adams picked up right where he left off in the indoor season with a win in the men's long jump. Franklin, the 2014 MVC indoor long jump champion, won on a leap of 7.27m (23-10.25) -- three and one-half inches shy of his PR set at the indoor conference meet. Right now, that jump ranks 14th regionally and 26th in the country.
Fellow freshman Kyle Landon returned to the long jump with a personal best leap of 6.95m (22-09.75), which was good for third place. Junior Dean Jordan also posted a PR in the event, as his jump of 6.87m (22-06.50) was good for sixth place.
Southern got two runner-up finishes on the women's side, as reigning MVC champs Indiana State swept both the discus and long jump on Friday.
Junior Ashley Gaston came in second in the discus behind Sycamore All-American Mary Theisen (49.27m/161-08). Gaston threw 48.47m (159-00), which currently ranks 22nd in the west region and 28th nationally. Behind her in the discus were fellow junior Sophia Lozano (fourth place, 44.13m/144-09) and sophomore Alexus Scott (ninth, 43.16m/141-07 PR).
Southern got three female long jumpers into finals on Friday, led by 2014 MVC indoor champion Lauren Cheadle. The junior finished second at 5.70m (18-08.50), and was joined in finals by senior Sarah Rautio (sixth, 5.40m/17-08.75) and sophomore Jalen Peet (seventh, 5.31m/17-05.25).
