Saluki women in third, men in fifth after first day of Big Blue Classic

    CHARLESTON, Ill. -- The Saluki women's track team currently sits in third place and the men in fifth after the first day of the Big Blue Classic hosted by Eastern Illinois on Friday.

    Southern only competed in three events at the first day: the men's and women's hammer throws and the women's 400 meter hurdles. In just two events competed in on Day One (and six total that were scored), the Saluki women currently have 18 meet points and rank third behind Eastern Illinois (35) and Western Michigan (27). Through seven total events scored, the Saluki men sit in fifth place after grabbing 13 points in the men's hammer throw alone. Only Division I schools are scored in the team rankings.

    Junior Curtis Wideman was the highest Division I finisher in the men's hammer at 62.11m (203-09), which was good for third overall. Also scoring in the men's hammer were Josh Freeman (12th overall, seventh in DI, 48.10m/157-10) and Kyle Walker (14th overall, eighth in DI, 45.92m/150-08).

    Fellow junior Sophia Lozano was the Division I runner-up in the women's hammer, finishing third overall at 52.65m (172-09). Erin Scott (sixth overall, fourth in DI, 49.40m/162-01), Freya Block (seventh overall, fifth in DI, 48.88m/160-04) and Alexus Scott (11th overall, eighth in DI, 45.66m/149-10) each scored in the hammer as well.



    Day Two will begin with the men's javelin and the women's discus at 10 a.m.
