CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Saluki track and field began the Joey Haines Invitational on Friday with a men's hammer throw win courtesy of J.C. Lambert, as well as a strong showing in the women's hammer throw.
Senior J.C. Lambert was in second at the end of the preliminary round, but found a second wind in the finals to win with a heave of 63.29m. This is Lambert's third consecutive hammer throw win.
In the women's hammer throw, either current or former Salukis occupied six of the top nine spots. Former Saluki Gwen Berry won the event with a toss of 69.90m, and the next three spots were occupied three Salukis who broke personal bests: Kim Fortney (63.75m, PR), DeAnna Price (62.40m, PR) and Sophia Lozano (fourth, 54.40m PR). Also making it to finals were Ashley Gaston (seventh, 51.40m PR) and D'Monami Gardner (ninth, 48.96m).
The meet resumes on Day Two at 11 a.m. with more field events and at 11:30 a.m. with the men's 3000m steeplechase.
